‘Museums as Shapers of Community Identity’ will be the second international museum conference organised by the Hungarian Open Air Museum – Museum Education and Methodology Centre. The invited lecturers of the conference come from museums that, according to their mission, establish, shape or reinforce the identity of a given community by collecting, preserving and presenting its historical and cultural heritage. Following the plenary session, with the participation of the invited speakers, workshops will be held on the various ways the museums can and should shape their respective community’s identity.
We count on museum educators, museologists, curators, museum PR and communication professionals, museum directors, academic professors and students who are interested in international and Hungarian practices of museums in shaping the identity of their community. The conference will provide an opportunity for the participants to enrich their knowledge with good examples and good practices from the field of museum education, permanent and temporary exhibition curating, and to learn more about the application of digital museum collections in the field of public education.

Eva Dittingerová, Head of Education, Museum of Romani Culture
The Education Department of the Museum of Romani Culture acquaints visitors with the Romani culture, traditions and history by way of educational programmes and workshops. Educational programmes use Museum exhibits, documents, audio and video recordings and memories of eye-witnesses. We place emphasis on interactive working methods, we entertain elements of drama education, support development of creative thinking and give space for authentic discovery of information and its processing.
Since 2005 we perform activities promoting the success of socially disadvantaged children at school. Individual and group tutoring focuses on improving the results of children at school and in particular their motivation for further education. Tutoring is closely linked with leisure activities which represent strong motivation and reward for children who regularly attend the tutoring.
